Biography

Romy Saalfeld was born December 14, 1960 in the city of Weissenfels , East Germany . She was trained in Leipzig at the DHfK Leipzig sports club under the guidance of coach Hertha Weissig.

For the first time she declared herself in rowing in the 1978 season, of the year she became a member of the GDR rowing team and won in the steering wheelless doubles at the World Junior Championships in Belgrade.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - she took first place in the oar steering fours as a member of the team, which also included the rowers Ramona Kapheim , Sylvia Fröhlich , Angelika Noack and Kirsten Wenzel , thereby winning the golden Olympic medal. For this outstanding achievement at the end of the season she was awarded the Order of Merit to the Fatherland in silver [1] .

After the Moscow Olympics, Salfeld for some time remained in the main team of the East German national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1981, she visited the World Championships in Munich , from where she brought the silver dignity award won in the steering fours - only the crew from the USSR passed their team in the final.

Subsequently, she married rower Ronald Topf and took his last name. Worked at IBM .
