Montevideo 1938 - a chess tournament held in the capital of Uruguay from March 7 to 25, 1938
The tournament was held in the resort area of Carrasco , located in the southeast of Montevideo .
The competition was attended by the strongest Uruguayan chess players, guests from Argentina, Chile and Brazil. The competition received a special status thanks to the participation of the reigning world champion A. A. Alekhine.
Alekhine took 1st place with a margin of 1½ points from Argentinean silver medalist C. Guimard. 3rd place was taken by another Argentine chess player V. Fenollo.
Often this competition is mistakenly called the championship of South America . In fact, the 1938 South American Championship was held in Rio de Janeiro and ended with the victory of the Argentine trio Hul. Bolbochan , K. Guimard and V. Fenollo.
Tournaments similar to this were held in Montevideo also in 1939 (again with Alekhine) and 1941.
