History
In 1849, a group of German colonists from settled on the northern side of the River Sibolo Creek - a place that the colonists gave the name Tusculum, was about one and a half kilometers west of the current location of the city. Three years later, in 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James founded a settlement, which they named Bern (Burne), in honor of the German writer and publicist Ludwig Berne (1786-1837). In 1856 a post office appeared in Bern. By 1859, there were 10 houses in the settlement [2] .
In 1862, Kendall County was formed, and Bern was chosen as the administrative center of the new district [3] . The first Kendall County courthouse was built in 1870, and it served until the 1990s. By 1884, about 250 inhabitants lived in Bern, there were five hotels in it. The basis of the local economy was tourism and cotton . In addition, the construction of the , which was commissioned by 1887, contributed to population growth. In 1890, the population of Bern was already about 900 people [2] .
In 1909, Bern received city status. In 1914, about 950 people lived in Bern, and by 1928 the city’s population had grown to two thousand. As a result of the Great Depression, incomes from tourism and cotton production have sharply decreased, and the city’s population has almost halved - according to the 1930 census, 1,117 people lived in the city. Repeated population growth occurred in the 1950s, when many working in San Antonio began to use Bern as a “sleeping area”. By 1960, the population of Bern reached 2169 people. The population continued to grow in the following decades [2] , exceeding ten thousand by 2010 [1] .
