Biography

Born on September 27, 1772 in Quebec, in the Scottish family of Colin Drummond and his wife Catherine of the Olyphant family. Gordon's father first came to Lower Canada in 1764 as a representative in Quebec for London-based Adam Drummond & Franks . In Quebec, Colin Drummond became a business partner of businessman and politician , and served as general commissioner and deputy general treasurer in the province of Quebec. Four years after the death of Colin Drummond, in 1780, the family left Quebec and returned to England.

Gordon was educated at and enlisted in the British Army in 1789 as an Ensign in the 1st Scottish Infantry Regiment. In 1794, he served as a junior lieutenant colonel in the Netherlands under the command of the Duke of York . Then served in the Mediterranean and West Indies . In 1805, at the age of 33, Drummond was promoted to major general . In 1807, he married Margaret Russell, daughter of William Russell (1734-1817) from Brancepeth Castle in County Durham .

Gordon Drummond was a member of the Anglo-American War of 1812-1815. At the end of 1813, he was sent to Upper Canada as Lieutenant Governor, replacing the unpopular officer . Drummond participated in the capture of Fort Niagara, in the Battle of Buffalo, in the Battle of Landis Lane and in the siege of Fort Erie. At the beginning of 1815, after the cessation of all hostilities, Drummond remained in Canada as lieutenant governor, and when was recalled to the UK, he took over as governor general and administrator of Canada. Other than promoting peace under the , his post-war career in Canada as a civilian administrator was not remarkable. In 1816, Drummond moved to the UK, where he was honored for his contribution to the war and promoted to full general in 1825. He no longer participated in the fighting, being in positions in various British infantry units: 88th Regiment of Foot , 71st Regiment of Foot , 49th Regiment of Foot and 8th Infantry Regiment .

He died on October 10, 1854 in London in his own house.

The city of Drummondville in Central Quebec was named after him.
