Guimaraes

Guimaraes ( port. Guimarães ; [ gimɐˈɾɐ̃ĩʃ ]) - a city in Portugal , the center of the eponymous municipality in the Braga district. The population is 52.2 thousand inhabitants (city), 162.6 thousand inhabitants (municipality). Guimaraes is called the cradle of Portugal.

Location

The city is located 16 km southeast of adm. downtown district of Braga . Included in the economic and statistical region is the Northern region and the Avi subregion. According to the old administrative division, he entered the province of Minho .

The municipality borders:

  • in the north - with the municipality of Povua di Lanozu
  • in the east - with the municipality of Fafe
  • in the south - with the municipalities of Felgeiras , Vizela , Santo Tirsu
  • in the west - with the municipality of Vila Nova di Famalican
  • in the northwest - with the municipality of Braga

History

The rights of the city were granted to the village around Guimaraes Castle in 1096 by the first Portuguese ruler Enrique .

Here, on June 24, 1128, at the Battle of San Mamed, his son Afonso Enriques defeated his mother Teresa Leon and declared the independence of the Portuguese state from the kingdom of Leon . Here, the day after the victory over the Moors at the Battle of Ouric , on July 26, 1139, Afonso Enriques proclaimed himself king of independent Portugal under the name Afonso I.

The historic city of Guimaraes is associated with the formation in the XII century. Portuguese national identity. This is an exceptionally well-preserved genuine example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern city. The variety of types of its buildings reveals the specifics of the development of Portuguese architecture during the 15th – 19th centuries, when traditional building materials and methods were used. In 2001, the historic city center was declared by UNESCO a World Cultural Heritage .

Guimaraes along with the Slovenian city of Maribor was the " cultural capital of Europe " in 2012 [1] .
