Adolph-Leon Willette ( fr. Adolphe Léon Willette , born July 30, 1857 , Chalon-on-Marne - d. February 4, 1926 , Paris ) is a French artist, illustrator, cartoonist and master of poster art.

Life and work
Born in the family of Colonel Henri-Leon Willett, personal adjutant of the French Marshal Francois-Achille Bazin . At 18, he went to Paris, where he studied painting for four years at the National School of Fine Arts , in the class of Alexander Cabanel . In 1881, A.-L. Willett first exhibited his work at the Paris Salon . In 1882, he opened his art studio at Montmartre . Among other things, the artist illustrates the works of Victor Hugo , creates story postcards, draws up restaurant menus and so on. Collaborates with various Paris newspapers and magazines, printing illustrations and cartoons by A.-L. Willett. The artist’s popularity is facilitated by his colorful hand-drawn images of the characters in the comedy of the masks of Pierrot and Colombina (1888). Unlike many of his contemporary painters, Willett did not share the then fashionable passion for impressionism . In 1888, in Paris, a personal exhibition of the artist's works.
Adolph-Leon Willett is involved in the design of numerous cabarets, hotels and restaurants in Montmartre. In 1889, he worked on decorating the variety show Moulin Rouge , illustrates such publications as Le Chat noir , Le Courrier français , Le Triboulet , Le Rire , and since 1901 also L'Assiette au Beurre . Collaborates in Le Pierrot (1888-1891), La Vache enragée (1896-1897), Le Pied de nez (1901), Les Humoristes (together with Alexander Steinlen from 1901).
Distinguished by anti-Semitic views. During the trial against Dreyfus in 1894, he took an active anti- Dreyfussar position and repeatedly appeared in print with degrading Jewish caricatures. He collaborated in 1893-1897 with the magazine La Libre Parole illustrée , which was led by the nationalist anti-Semite Edward Drumont .
March 13, 1906 the artist was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor , in 1912 he became an officer of the order. In 1914, Willett joined the "Catholic Union of Fine Arts", took part in his masses. In 1920, he, along with Jean-Louis Foren , Maurice Numont, Raul Geren and Francis Pulbo, proclaimed the creation of the “Free Republic of Montmartre” (République libre de Montmartre), whose president Willett remained until mid-1923.
Died in Paris, buried in the cemetery of Montmartre . One of the squares of Paris near Sacre Coeur in 1927 was renamed in honor of the artist in the square of Willett ("square Willett").
