Biography
Born in the family of the law historian Heinrich Siegel , maternal grandson of the public figure . He studied mathematics and philosophy from 1890 to 1894 at the University of Vienna . At the beginning of his studies, he was a member of the student association Symposion. Siegel spent the summer semester of 1893 at the University of Gottingen , where in 1894 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
After working as an assistant at the Department of Higher Mathematics at the German Technical School in Brno (from 1895 to 1896), in 1898 he passed the exam for the right to teach philosophical propaedeutics. Then Siegel taught in Brno and Vienna , in 1900 he was rehabilitated . Since 1913, an extraordinary, since 1919 an ordinary professor of philosophy at the University of Chernivtsi . In 1927, he accepts an invitation to occupy the Department of Philosophy at the University of Graz . In 1937 he retired, but a year later he was invited to return back and continued to head the department until the end of his life. In 1939 he was elected a corresponding member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences .
Karl Siegel specialized in the fields of the history of philosophy, the methodology of the natural sciences, and the theory of knowledge. Its archive is kept in the library of the University of Graz.
