Biography
Robert Forhen was born March 27, 1936 in the city of Newmarket , Ontario , Canada . At the age of fourteen, he left his hometown to play hockey, studied at the University of Waterloo , where he was a member of the local university hockey team. He later transferred to the University of British Columbia , received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.
He began his hockey career in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, where he played for the Guelph Baltimors and Barry Flyers teams between 1953-1956. Then he spent three seasons at the Sudbury Wolves club from Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, he joined the main team of the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchman adult team and won the right to defend the country's honor at the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics . He took part in six matches, scoring one goal and won the Olympic silver medal.
In 1960-1962 he played for the Greensboro Generals and Cleveland Barons clubs in the Eastern Hockey League and the American Hockey League, respectively.
Later he returned to Kitchener Waterloo and became part of the Canadian Olympic team, assembled to participate in the Olympic Games in Innsbruck . This time, Forchen became the top scorer of his team, scoring a total of nine goals, but the Canadians took only fourth place in the final protocol and did not get among the winners.
In 1965, he performed at the World Championships in Finland , but here he also became the fourth.
Resuming his career at the club level, in 1967-1969 he represented the clubs “Orilla Pepsis” and “Barry Flyers” in the Ontario Adult Hockey League.
After completing his sports career, he worked as a teacher in high school, and then went into politics, in particular, in the 1970s, he served as city councilor and mayor of his hometown of Newmarket. In the period 1978-1984 he was chairman of the council of the York region, until 1995 he was the chief administrative officer of the region.
For his sporting achievements in 2010, Robert Forchen was one of the first to be introduced to the Newmarket Sports Hall of Fame [1] .
He died on June 3, 2018 at the age of 82 years [2] .
