Career

Purnomo was involved in athletics , drawing on the success of another runner, Mohammed Sarengat, who also achieved international success, being himself from a simple family. Purnomo participated in the championship in athletics between first-grade students of high school. At that time he competed only in socks, because he could not afford shoes. He won a gold medal in the men's 100m race at the Asian Championships in Athletics in Jakarta (1985), and twice became a champion in the Southeast Africa Games . He is the only Asian runner to qualify for the men's 100m semifinals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics .

Personal life

Purnomo was married to R. A. Endang Irmastivi, he is the father of four sons. After completing his career, he took an active part in a sports organization that worked with former Indonesian Olympians. Later, he also engaged in political activities as part of the leadership of the Movement for Greater Indonesia party, holding the post of deputy general chairman of the youth and sports sector [4] [5] .

On February 15, 2019, Purnomo died of cancer after an illness that lasted several years [6] .

  • Two-time silver medalist of the Asian Athletics Championships in Jakarta 1985;
  • Winner of the 1985 Asian Athletics Championships in Jakarta ;
  • Champion of the Games of Southeast Asia at a distance of 200 m 1985;
  • Champion of the Games of Southeast Asia in the relay 4 × 100 m 1985 (in the national team of Indonesia);
  • Bronze medalist of the Southeast Asian Games at a distance of 100 m 1985.
