The church got its name when the original market church "St. Pancras" on modern Marienplatz had to be demolished in 1784 due to dilapidation, and then it took over the functions of the parish church .

The first stone of today's market church was laid in 1682 by Prince Bishop . The construction plans belong to the Jesuit lay brother . September 14, 1692, only ten years later, it was consecrated as a Jesuit church. The church was already a university institution and a gymnasium.

During World War II in March 1945, the baroque altar was completely destroyed. Thanks to the initiative of the former director of the Theodorianum Gymnasium Franz Josef Weber and the initiator Georg Hagenhoff, Paderborn considered it possible to maintain the church. Together with the city of Paderborn and the land of North Rhine-Westphalia, expenses were cut in three.

In the first two phases of construction (1989–1990 and 1990–1993), “great architecture” was restored for about 1.8 million German marks.

At the third or fifth stage of construction (1993–1994, 1995 and 1996–1997), with the help of well-known sculptors, ornaments , floral decorations and putti were repaired for about 2.7 million DM.

At the sixth - seventh stage of construction (1998–2000 and 2000–2001), the remaining works on floral decoration were completed, and four figures of evangelists were created on the second floor and the gilding process began. Costs amounted to about 2.2 million German marks.

At the eighth and last stage of construction (2002–2004), gilding and painting were done for about 1.3 million German marks. A total of eight million German marks (about four million euros) was spent over 15 years for the reconstruction of the church. A complete reconstruction was also carried out using photos and templates.
