History
Avangard-Agro was founded in 2003 . The initial goal was to grow malting barley for the company Russian Malt, one of the largest producers of malt in Russia [2] . The growing demand for high-quality barley for malt production forced Avangard-Agro to expand its land bank at a fast pace: in 2005, the total agricultural land amounted to 35 thousand ha, in 2008 - already 142.5 thousand ha, 98 thousand ha from owned by the company. The assets located in the Voronezh, Kursk and Oryol regions were supplemented by the lands of the Belgorod and Lipetsk regions, and in 2016 - the Tula.
The holding is one of the leaders in the BEFL rating with the largest increase in the land bank from 2012 to 2019 [3] . The agricultural machinery park consists of 3,400 units. The main crops grown are barley, wheat, sunflowers, corn, sugar beets, peas, soybeans and lupins.
In 2015, the Russian Malt company, which consisted of 4 malt plants - Voronovsky (Lviv), Orlovsky (Zmievka), Korenevsky (Korenevo) and Ostrogozhsky (Elevator), was merged with Avangard-Agro holding. Since 2006, Avangard Malz has been another malt holding unit, consisting of 4 plants located in Gelsenkirchen , Bremen , Grossaitingen and Koblenz .
Owner and management
Avangard-Agro is owned by Kirill Minovalov and is part of the financial and industrial holding, the core of which is Avangard Bank, 99.7% of which Minovalov also owns.
Kirill Minovalov is the chairman of the Avangard-Agro board of directors, and, according to him, in an interview with Forbes [4] , he personally runs the holding.
Activities
According to the data for 2019, Avangard-Agro cultivates 450 thousand hectares of agricultural land in central Russia (7th place among the largest owners of agricultural land in Russia for 2019 [5] ) and unites 51 agricultural enterprises with a permanent staff of 4750 people. The holding enterprises are equipped with grain receiving points, elevators and their own seed farm.
The key activities of the holding are the cultivation of grain and industrial crops and the production of malt. The holding includes four malt plants in Russia with a production capacity of more than 500 thousand tons per year and 4 plants in Germany, with a total capacity of 340,000 tons of malt per year. Three of the four plants in Germany have direct access to key European waterways and, thus, transport accessibility to the central European ports of Antwerp , Rotterdam , Hamburg and Bremerhaven . According to Firstkey, in 2016 the holding ranks 7th among the world's largest malt producers with a production share of 3.8% [6] .
Sales of Avangard-Agro products are carried out by the Avangard-Agro-Trade trading company. The holding supplies grain products to producers both in Russia and abroad, in particular, to Germany, Spain and Norway.
The holding adheres to the strategy of transparency of product information, for which it created its own system for collecting and analyzing information [7] . Data is transmitted online and published on the company's website, where you can get complete information for each batch of grain. Agroinvestor magazine called Avangard-Agro the leader in terms of the disclosure of information about the crop business on its website [8] .
According to the financial statements of the holding, in 2018, the value of its assets amounted to about 49.5 billion rubles. The holding ended the year with revenue of 17.3 billion rubles, net profit amounted to 4.7 billion rubles [9] .
Criticism
The holding is periodically accused of illegal use of agricultural lands and corruption ties with heads of local administrations [10] . Holding enterprises receive fines for the inappropriate condition of agricultural land [11] , administrative violations [12] . Also, violations were identified during the construction of the elevator in the village of Zolotukhino, Kursk region [13] .
