Biography

Born April 15, 1850 in the municipality of Trogel, the Swiss canton of Appenzell-Ausserroden, he was the only surviving child in the family of Johann Kaspar Grubenmann and his wife Katharina Eugster.

The family lived in extremely cramped circumstances, and the boy had to contribute to her well-being already in school years. Thanks to a scholarship and the help of friends, he was able to complete his education, and in 1874 received a diploma of a certified teacher of natural sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (now the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich ). In the same year he was elected professor of chemistry, mineralogy and geology at the cantonal school of the city of Frauenfeld , where he worked as a rector from 1880 to 1888. [one]

At the same time, Grubenmann conducted petrographic field work in the volcanic region of Hegau , Germany , as well as in the Alps . He visited the volcanic regions of Italy and studied for some time in Munich (1875–1876) and Heidelberg (1886). In 1886 he received his doctorate at the University of Zurich , defending a dissertation on basalts in Hegau. Two years later, he received the title of hi assistant professor at the University of Zurich and after the death of G.A. Kenngott became a professor of mineralogy and petrography, as well as the director of the Mineralogical and Petrographic Institute of the Technological Institute and the University of Zurich. He was also the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (1896–1898) at the University of Zurich; Head of the Department of Natural Sciences (1907–1909) and Rector (1909–1911) at the Technological Institute. Johann Ulrich Grubenmann resigned in 1920, but remained an active scientist. In 1920, as a professor of mineralogy and petrography at the University of Zurich and the Higher Technical School of Zurich Grubenmann, his student Paul Niggli replaced him, who worked in these positions until the end of his life.

In 1921, he founded the journal Schweizerische mineralogische und petrographische Mitteilungen [2] , which he edited until his death.

He died on March 16, 1924 in Zurich.
