Biography
Born in 1759 in the village of Bogorodskoye, Simbirsk province . Came from an old noble family. Received primary education at home. In 1767, Alexander Dmitriev was sent to Kazan to see his mother's grandfather A. A. Beketov . Then he was given to the Kazan boarding house of Manzhen , where his brother Ivan was soon sent. In 1771, together with his grandfather, the brothers moved to Simbirsk , where they entered the Cabrite boarding house, but did not stay there for long. At the hostel, the brothers studied French, German and Russian, mathematics, history and geography [3] . Soon, his father took them to the village and continued his studies with them [4] . Father instilled in children an interest in literature and theater. Under the influence of D. Serebryakov, the children became addicted to reading Russian books [3] .
In 1772 he was recorded in the Semenovsky regiment ; two years later he came to serve in St. Petersburg and enrolled in a regimental school, and already in 1775, at the request of his uncle, Senator Nikita Afanasevich Beketov , he was promoted to fourier; On January 1, 1787, of the sergeants he was granted a warrant officer, on January 1, 1788 - a second lieutenant. On May 15, 1789, he was released from the Semenovsky regiment into the army as prime major, and in the same year, with the production of lieutenant colonels, he was assigned to the Suzdal musketeer regiment stationed in Kazan [4] .
In 1790, he participated in the Swedish campaign and was in Finland. During the war, he distinguished himself by taking the battalion after the commander who was killed, "passed the burning bridge and drove the enemy away from the crossing" [3] . At the end of the war, in order to be closer to his father, he moved to the regiment stationed in Kazan. Here in 1794, Alexander Ivanovich married Maria Alexandrovna Pil. They had a son, Mikhail (1796-1866), who became a famous poet, critic, translator and memoirist. Soon Alexander Ivanovich with the regiment was sent to Yekaterinodar , where in September 1798 he suddenly died in the rank of colonel. Ivan Dmitriev honored the memory of his brother with the elegy of Adonida. Living in St. Petersburg, Alexander Ivanovich came close and until his death was on friendly terms with Nikolai Karamzin , who often mentioned his friend in “Letters of a Russian Traveler”, “A Flower on the Coffin of My Agaton” and letters [4] .

Alexander Ivanovich Dmitriev himself was engaged in literary activities. His works include:
- “A collection of letters from Abelard and Eloise, with the addition of a description of the life of these unfortunate lovers, from Fr. Al Dm. ”(M.: typography. N. I. Novikova, 1783);
- composition E.-K. Freron and P.-E. Colbert d'Estuville "Adonides, with the addition of some love poems by Castriott of Albanian, from Fr. A. D. ”(St. Petersburg 1783);
- drama K.-I. Müller von Friedberg's “Capture of St. Lucia, Antilles American Island, drama in 1 d. From the French. "(St. Petersburg 1786);
- the prosaic translation “Poems of ancient bards, translated by A. D.” (St. Petersburg 1788); implemented according to the French collection “Selected Erzian Tales and Poems”; Derzhavin met with Ossian from this translation;
- the prosaic translation of “Lusiyad, a poem in 10 songs of L. Camoes” (M. 1788), a translation from French, which was very famous at the time; in it the Russian reader first met the largest representative of the Portuguese Renaissance
- “Glory to the Russians and the grief of the Swedes” (St. Petersburg 1790), printed without the author’s name and written under the impression of the Swedish War [4] ;
- the poems “Separation” [5] , “To Temir” [6] and “Forgive” [7] appeared in the “Moscow Journal ” (1792, part 8, dec.) of Karamzin [3] .
