Third shadow

The Third Shadow ( Jap. 第三 の 影武者 , Dysan-no Kagemus ; Eng. The Third Shadow ) is a Japanese black-and-white historical film-drama ( Dzidaygeki ), directed at the Dyai studio in 1963 by director Umetsugu Inoue . The screen version of the novel by , a left-wing writer who specialized in historical novels, whose works are distinguished by violent conflicts. Among other screen versions of his works the most famous are: Tadashi Imai ’s film “ A Tale of the Cruelty of Bushido ” ( 1963 ) and “Murasaki Ukenooska” (the film is in two parts, in the title role of Hasidzo Okava ). This left-radical samurai film talks about the futility of all ambitious designs. The hero in pursuit of ghosts loses everything he has: a family, a loved one, himself, plunging into the abyss of madness. And it is intriguing that such films with proletarian policies embedded in them, despite the harsh criticism of the ruling class, ultimately defend the class system against intentions. After all, our hero could not have such a miserable life if he were satisfied with his peasant status.

Story

In the 16th century, Kinoske Ninomiya, the second son of an impoverished farmer, lives in the mountainous province of Hida. One day, Sakhiota Shinomura, the chief of staff of Lord Yasutaki Ikamoto, whose headquarters is located in Mityai Castle, hires Ninomiya for service. Kinoscale is not used as a soldier, but to become the twin of a lord. Lord Yasutaka already has two twins. The first “shadow” is a man named Kuvano, whose duty is to go to the battlefield with the lord to help him in an emergency. The second twin named Hirose must remain in the castle and prepare for a night attack.

Kinoske begins to study the habits of the master, his manner of speaking and holding on to people. He learned everything about the lord and, as a final test, he is ordered to spend the night with Lady Kochagi, one of the Lord's mistresses.

When an arrow hits the Lord’s left eye during a battle, his loyal Sinomura puts a blindfold on Kinoské’s eye and forces him to lead troops. The people of Mitai, seeing their master alive, rally and defeat the enemy. On the night after the battle, celebrating the victory, Sinomura, beating the twins, orders to cut out all three of them in the left eye so that the “shadows” correspond to their original. Hirose, the second “shadow” of the lord tries to escape, but they kill him. Kuvano and Kinoske are forced to lose their left eyes. That same night, the enemy was attacked suddenly at Mitya’s castle. Kuvano has to accept death for the lord, and Kinoske is charged with rescuing Lord Yasutaku. Kinoske and the Lord run through the forest, where the wounded and exhausted Lord becomes ill. His hand is rotting. Yasutaka orders his “shadow” Kinoske to cut off his hand. Kinoske fulfills the order, but then it comes to his consciousness that he himself will subsequently have to part with his own hand, so that everything will be like that of the master. Kinoske rises and kills his master.

Coming out of the forest, Kinoské meets Sinomura, who, having learned of the death of Yasutaki, decides to deceive the world by making Kinoske the head of the clan. Forgery will be very difficult to expose, because Kinoske as two drops of water is similar to Yasutaka. Kinoscie meets with Kokhagi, who tells him that she always knew that he was not a real Yasutaka. Kokhagi is in love with Kinoske and asks him to run with her. But he, having now acquired incredible power, refuses to live a simple life.

Sinomura collects the remnants of the troops of Lord Yasutaki, and together with the imaginary gentleman they take shelter from the owner of the neighboring lands, Lord Yoritsune Miki. Here Kinoske, entering the role of Yasutaki, declares his intention to return the family castle. Lord Mickey promises to marry his daughter, Princess Teruhime, to Yasutake. During the fierce battle, Kinoscé kills Sinomura, the only one who knows the secret of his personality and believes that he thereby secured himself.

On the night of the wedding "Yasutaki" with Princess Teruhime, a vassal Yoritsune by the name of Sadamitsu Mika tears off her mask from Kinoske. He found on the body of the deceased Sinomura a suicidal message in which the dying revealed the secret of the imaginary Yasutaki. Nevertheless, Sadamitsu, who turned out to be Teruhime's lover, offers the imaginary lord a deal. Everything will remain in its place and he will not reveal the secret to anyone if Kinoske continues to play her role Yasutaki during the day and Saddamitsu spends the night in the princess’s bed. Sly Sadamitsu even proposes for Kinoske to live with his beloved Kohagi as a consolation. Kinoské refuses and the Kokhagi kill before his eyes.

When years later Hideyoshi Toyotomi united all of Japan and captured Mitya's castle, a one-eyed and insane old man was found in the basement, who died the next day.
