Biography

Samuel Hirshenberg (Hershenberg) was born in 1865 in Lodz , in the family of David Gerschenberg (1844, Zgierz - 1907, Lodz) and Sura-Pearl Gerschenberg (born Avner, 1845, Tushin - 1906, Lodz). Parents wanted their son to become a doctor. But the boy loved to draw. At the age of 15 he saw pictures of Jan Matejko , which made a strong impression on him. Samuel studied drawing in Krakow for two years, and then from 1885 to 1889 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich .

Biography

In 1893, Hirshenberg settled in his hometown of Lodz. The dramatic history of the Jewish people occupied a significant place in the artist's work. Famous works have been created in this direction: “A Wandering Jew” (1899), “The Exile” (1904) and “The Black Flag” (1905).

In 1900, in Paris , Munich and Berlin, the film “Wandering Jew” was shown, which the author himself greatly valued. The audience took the picture quite cold. The disappointed artist was very saddened, but found the strength to continue his creative path.

In 1901, Hirshenberg set off on a long journey to Italy. There he continued to draw. In 1904, Hirshenberg returned to Russian Poland and settled in Krakow . In 1907, he followed the call of his friend Boris Schatz and immigrated to Palestine . Here the artist managed to create several more canvases, but in 1908 he suddenly died in Jerusalem .
