Criminal activity
Arun Gawley worked in textile factories in Mumbai, located in the central areas - Parel, Chinchpokli, Bikulla and Cotton Green. From the 1970s to the end of the 1980s, Mumbai's textile industry witnessed mass strikes by workers due to wage arrears. As a result, many young people (including Arun Gavli) lost their jobs and eventually found a shortcut to quick money by participating in and organizing illegal gambling. Then Arun Gavli joined the Baikulla Company gang led by gangsters Rama Nike and Babu Reshim, after which he began to participate in the illegal trade in alcohol.
The Mumbai police searched the residence of Arun Gavli several times and eventually managed to stop his criminal activities. Arun Gavli was arrested several times for crimes and held in custody for a long period of time during the trial. However, he was not convicted in most cases, as witnesses did not testify against him for fear of revenge. In August 2012, the court found him guilty of the assassination of Shiv Sena leader Kamlakar Jamsandekar, in addition to him, 11 more people were brought to justice [12] .
Policy
In the 1980s, Arun Gawli received the political protection of Shiv Sena leader Bala Takere , who criticized the Mumbai police for tough actions against Hindu gangsters such as Arun Gawli and Saya Bansoda. Bal Takerey then read on the front page of a city newspaper a letter addressed to him, which was written by a warring Hindu criminal gangster [13] . In the mid-1990s, Arun Gawli entered into conflict with Shiv Sena, killing several of its members and created his own political party, Achil Bharatiya Sena .
In 2004, Arun Gavli was elected a member of the State Legislature from the Chinchpokli constituency as a candidate from Achilles Bharatiya Sena. The election of Arun Gavli is believed to be due to his popularity among local residents, which distinguishes him from most other politicians who did not know the Marathi language .
Arun Gavli’s political career was badly damaged when his nephew and politician Sachin Ahir openly opposed him and joined the Nationalist Party of Congress, Sharad Pavar . Achir even challenged Arun Gavli in the next Lok Sabha election from the Nationalist Party of Congress, which led to the defeat of both of them.
