Edward Geilen Givens, Jr. ( Eng. Edward Galen "Ed" Givens Jr .; January 5, 1930 - June 6, 1967 ) - US Air Force officer , test pilot and NASA astronaut , major. He had no space flight experience.

Astronaut of NASA's fifth set in 1966. He died in a car accident. Immortalized in the sculptural composition " Fallen Astronaut " on the moon .

Biography

Born and raised in Kuan , Texas . During training at the school, he took an active part in the youth organization of the [1] , was fond of airplanes and gliding . In 1946 he received a pilot's license. After graduating from high school, he studied one semester at the University of Texas A&M and three semesters at the University of Oklahoma , then entered the US Naval Academy , which he graduated with honors in 1952 and received a bachelor of science degree [2] [3] .

In 1952 he began serving in the US Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant . He underwent flight training as a cadet under the command of the Air Force personnel training. In 1954, he was promoted to first lieutenant , served as a fighter pilot and commander of an air link in the 35th fighter-interceptor air group, which was based in Japan [3] .

In January 1956 he was transferred by an instructor pilot to the Air Force Interceptor Weapons School. In 1958, after graduating with honors from the U.S. Air Force test pilot school to train pilots for experimental flight tests at the Air Force base in California , he was left at the same school as an instructor in command and control systems. He later served at Point Mugu Marine Aviation Station in California as a test pilot for the 4th Experimental Aviation Squadron. He took part in the development of tactics for using the F8U-2N fighter in naval aviation units [3] .

From November 1961 to September 1962, he served as an assistant to the head of the US Air Force school for training pilots for experimental flight tests. In October 1962 he entered the Aerospace School of the Air Force research pilots, which he graduated in 1963. In 1966 he received the rank of major . By the time he was enlisted in the astronaut squad, he served as an implementation project officer in the 2nd Division of the Air Force Space Systems Division at the Houston Manned Space Flight Center. He participated in the development of the astronaut’s rocket launcher for space maneuvering (Astronaut Maneuvering Unit - AMU) [3] .

The total flight time for aircraft of various classes was 3,500 hours, of which about 2,800 hours - for jet aircraft [2] .

Space Training

In 1959, he was one of 32 candidates for astronauts, finalists of NASA's first recruitment . In April 1966, he was one of nineteen astronauts enrolled in NASA’s fifth set of astronauts. He was trained on the Apollo space program. He was part of the support crew for the first manned flight Apollo 1 [2] [3] .

Doom

He died on June 6, 1967 as a result of a car accident in his car near the city of Perland , near Houston . He was buried in a cemetery in his hometown of Quana, Texas. [2] [4] [5]

Family

Edward Givens was married to Ada Eve Mousse. The family has three children: son Edward Geilen 3rd (born 1964) and two daughters Katherine (born 1963) and Diana (born 1967) [3] [2] .

Memory

The name of Edward Givens is immortalized in the sculptural composition " Fallen Astronaut " on the Moon [5] .
