Vadsø (airport)

Vadsø Airport ( Norwegian. Vadsø lufthavn ; ( IATA : VDS , ICAO : ENVD )) is a regional airport located in Vadsø , in Finnmark , Norway . Managed by state-owned . The airport has one asphalt runway measuring 997X30 m, located at the 08/26 rate. It is operated by Airlines, using Dash 8-100 aircraft .

Content

History

In 1938, Widerøe began seaplane flights from Vadsø along the coast south to Trondheim [2] . During World War II, the route was closed, but resumed in 1946 when it was served by the using the Junkers Ju 52 . The water airfield in Vadsø was simple and consisted of a flight zone and a buoy; passengers were delivered to the plane by boat [3] . Since 1954, the route passed to Widerøe, which began to use the De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter [4] .

In 1966, a district committee was created to study the construction of small airfields in Finnmark, including Vadsø [5] . The Civil Aviation Administration considered two airport locations: in Fossemuren north of the city center and in Qibyu, 4 km east of the city. The second option was chosen [3] . The regional airport opened on August 1, 1974, its owner and operator was the municipality of Vadsø. received the right to fly, flying with De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter [3] . The airport building combined a passenger terminal for 30 people and a control tower . In 1984, to receive Dash 7 aircraft, a new terminal building of 350 m² was built along with a 1000 m² hangar. In 1995, Dash 8 aircraft were used for flights [3] .

Since January 1, 1997, the state-owned company has become the owner and operator of the airport in exchange for paying NOK 4.1 million to the municipality of Vadsø [6] . In 2007, navigational aids and an airstrip were modernized [3] .

The terminal building has a capacity of 170 passengers per hour and can handle two Dash 8-100 aircraft simultaneously [7] . The runway is 997 X 30 m in size, located at 08/26 . The airport is located at an altitude of 38.7 m above sea level. On the platform there is a parking lot for 2 aircraft of the Dash 8-100 class.

In 2018, the airport served 100 395 passengers, 6556 take-offs / landings were made [1] .

Traffic

The airport is located in the village of Kibyu, 4 km east of the center of Vadsø. There is a parking, taxi service and car rental [9] .

Accidents

  • On January 4, 1984, immediately after departure, a Cessna 172 aircraft with registration number LN-DAM, flying Vadsø - Kirkines, fell into the sea. Killed 3 people. The wreckage of the aircraft and the bodies of passengers were not found [10] [11] .
