Antarctic Names Advisory Committee

The Antarctic Names Advisory Committee ( English Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names , ACAN or US-ACAN) is a division of the United States Geographical Names Council that is responsible for developing recommendations for the names of geographic objects in Antarctica .

Despite the signing in 1959 and the subsequent ratification in 1961 of the Antarctic Treaty , which froze [1] territorial and political claims in Antarctica [2] of the world’s countries to any territory of the Antarctic region of the planet south of 60 ° S. sh., until now, a unified algorithm for the approval of Antarctic toponyms , recognized by the international community, has not been developed. In this regard, the United States does not recognize the territorial boundaries in the Antarctic, and ACAN assigns names to objects anywhere in the continent, consulting only with other national authorities of the United States.

ACAN in its activities is guided by the policy on the name of geographical objects, laid out on the official website of the Geographical Names Council [3] .
