It grows in the central regions of China - south of Gansu , southwest of Henan ( Neixiang ), west of Hubei , south of Shaanxi , northeast of Shanxi ( Wutaishan ), Sichuan . The species is very rare; it is fragmentary within the range in the mountain coniferous forests on the southern slopes of the Qinling ridge at altitudes of 1300–2000 meters above sea level. There was a significant reduction in the area of settlement and the size of the entire population, especially in Neixiang. Endangered species in need of protection.
Evergreen trees up to 15 m tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 50 cm. The trunk is covered with gray bark, scaly and flaking. Crown wide-conical shape. Winter buds spherical, slightly resinous, scales, purple-brown, pressed to the base. Seed cones are green, ripe pale brown or brown, rarely yellow-green, oblong ovoid-cylindrical in shape, 8-14 in length and 5-6.5 cm in diameter. Seed diamonds are about 2.7 cm long and 2.7- 3 cm wide, with tops broadly rounded or dull. Seeds ovoid, 5-6 per 3.5 mm with a wing of about 1 cm.
