History

The construction of the dam was started in 1721 by decision of V.N. Tatishchev , then suspended due to lack of approval by the Berg Collegium and resumed in March 1723 after the arrival of Wilhelm de Gennin in the Urals. The construction of the dam was completed on September 11, 1723 [1] . The dam gave mechanical energy to drive the mechanisms of the newly founded Yekaterinburg plant and served as the beginning of the construction of the city. The dam is basically built from larch trunks and granite . As a result of the construction of the dam on the Iset River , a pond was formed, now called the City Pond of Yekaterinburg . In several surviving buildings of the former factory, there is a museum of the history of architecture and industrial technology of the Urals. The main avenue of Yekaterinburg — now Lenin Avenue — passed along the axis of the dam.

The dam was 209 meters long, 42 meters wide and 6.5 meters high. The dam was erected from a log house filled with stone and selected clay, had a central and two side working cuts, to which two wooden waterways leading to the wheels were brought. The dam was designed by L. Zlobin, the foreman of the Nevyansk Plant. In the 1830s, the dam was expanded according to the project of M.P. Malakhov, and in 1886 a square was set up on it and busts of Peter I and Catherine I were installed (in 1917 the busts were dumped into the City Pond ). On March 11, 1958, a bust of P.P. Bazhov was installed. In 1972-1973, the dam, designed by Yu.P. Serdyukov, was again expanded and faced with granite, bas-reliefs were placed on the retaining wall, and sculptures symbolizing the skills of the Ural metallurgists were placed on the edges. In 1998, a passage was made from the side cut from the lower terrace of the Historical Square to the upper platform [1] , the dam was also reinforced with reinforced concrete ceilings. During the construction of a pedestrian tunnel under the dam on the 275th anniversary of the founding of the city in 1998, an excellent state of its construction was found, despite heavy traffic along it.
