Biography

Hezarpara Ahmed Pasha was the son of a professional soldier, likely of Greek origin. Instead of going to the army in the footsteps of his father, he decided to go to public administration. Initially, he received the position of assistant to the great vizier Kemankesh Kara Mustafa Pasha . In 1646, Ahmed Pasha was appointed a defector , and on September 21, 1647 he was awarded the title of Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire . He received this position due to the influence that he exerted on Sultan Ibrahim I [1] .

However, the sultan was a very unbalanced person. Ibrahim I knew very well and was fond of sable skins, as well as amber. In this regard, he forced Ahmed Pasha to buy large quantities of hides and amber for his palaces. Because of this, the great vizier had to concentrate more time on trade in sable and amber, and not on state affairs. During this time, during the Cretan War , the Venetian navy blocked the Canakkale (Dardanelles) Strait, and also seized control of the important fort Klis (in modern Croatia ). Moreover, large-scale purchases of sable and amber skins caused an additional budget deficit, which was already under pressure from the war [2] .

Death

In 1648, Ahmed Pasha imposed a heavy tax in order to cover large expenses of the treasury. However, this step caused anger and rebellion among the population of the Ottoman Empire, which was supported by the Janissaries . On August 7, 1648, the Janissaries, at the head of the crowd, broke into the palace of the Sultan and demanded that Ibrahim I listen to their demands, among which was the resignation of the great vizier. The frightened sultan agreed. Ahmed Pasha tried to escape and hide, but he was caught and executed. The furious crowd chopped the body of the former vizier into many parts. After that, Ahmed Pasha received the nickname "Hezarpar", which meant "a thousand pieces." A week later, after the assassination of Ahmed Pasha, Sultan Ibrahim I was also killed [3] .
