Life and work

Born in the family of a jeweler . He received his primary art education at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts ( 1879 - 1881 ), continued at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts ( 1881 - 1883 ), and completed it at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts ( 1884 - 1886 ) [3] .

In 1886 he returned to Stuttgart , where he leads a bohemian lifestyle [4] . The motives of his work at this time are landscapes, the nightlife of bohemia, as well as female nudity in the moonlight.

In the late 1880s . Pleyer is fond of the railroads as a symbol of technological progress; he is captivated, in his words, by “intoxication with speed” (“Rausch der Geschwindigkeit”) [5] . He writes many paintings on which trains, stations and railway stations of the Kingdom of Württemberg are captured. The patron of his new hobby is Baron Franz von Koenig-Faxenfeld, who acquires the paintings of Plauer and places them in the family castle of Faxenfeld [6] .

It is interesting that the son of Franz von Koenig-Faxenfeld, Reinhard von Koenig-Faxenfeld , was also imbued with "intoxication with speed" and became an outstanding engineer and inventor, however, in the field of not railway, but automobile transport . In 1982, Reinhard von König-Faxenfeld founded the “Faxenfeld Castle Foundation”, the funds from which support the public's open access to the castle and the replenishment of museum exhibits in it. In particular, many “railway” paintings by Hermann Ployer are displayed in the art gallery of the castle [7] . Also, the artist's paintings are presented at the Stuttgart Museum of Art .

Player was a member of the German Union of Artists . Along with Otto Reiniger , Christian Landenberger and Heinrich von Zügel, he is among the leading representatives of Impressionism among artists of southern Germany.

Hermann Pleyer died of tuberculosis at the age of 47.

Criticism

Hermann Pleyer was obsessed with the railroad, all his paintings contain locomotives. They are huge and black, they can even be called terrible, one picture depicts a huge cloud of steam, the engine is hidden behind it, the cloud resembles a ball of dirty lime [8] .

<In his paintings> the natural force in iron things, loud, even loud, wild and at the same time beautiful music.
