Vetluga ( north-west. Mar. Vtlӓ , Gornomar. Wedge ; meadowgar Votla ) - the river in the center of the European part of Russia , the left tributary of the Volga . It flows through the territory of the Kirov , Kostroma and Nizhny Novgorod regions and the Republic of Mari El .

The length of the river is 889 km, the basin area is 39,400 km². The average annual water discharge is 255 m³ / s downstream. The left bank is low, the right high (up to 100 m) is composed of marls and sandstones . For a slow, a lot of old ladies. The name of the river was put in the name of the now extinct Vetlugazavr , the remains of which were first found by Anatoly Nikolayevich Ryabinin on the bank of the Vetluga [2] [3] .
