Malmesbury is a small settlement in the southwest of England ( Wiltshire ) on the Avon River . Today the town has about 5 thousand inhabitants.
Malmesbury appeared in the early Middle Ages around the abbey founded in 675 (this year Aldhelm became abbot [1] ). The Irish monk Meldub lived and was buried here earlier . One of the abbots of this abbey until his death in 877 was John Scott Eriugen . In 939, the English king Ethelstan was buried here. In the XII century, William of Malmesbury lived here. In 1539, Henry VIII , within the framework of Tudor secularization, dissolved the monastery, the buildings passed into private hands, and the city lost its significance. In 1877, a railway station appeared in Malmesbury. One of the main attractions of the city is the abbey gardens (2 hectares), located near the ruins of the monastery [2] .
