Alexander Nikolayevich Gavrilov ( January 1, 1912 , Revel - October 3, 1999 , Tallinn ) - Soviet and Estonian oncologist ; Founder of Clinical Oncology in Estonia; Head of the Oncology Department of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of the ESSR ; Member of the Presidium of the All-Union Society of Oncologists; founder and long-term chairman of the Estonian Cancer Research Society; Honored Doctor of the Estonian SSR [1] .

Biography
Alexander was born in a large family, was the seventh child [2] . By nationality - Russian [3] . Alexander's father, Nikolai Gavrilov, was a worker [3] .
Alexander received his basic education in the village of Riisipere [2] , in 1931 he graduated from the Revel city Russian gymnasium, in 1940 - from the medical faculty of the University of Tartu [3] .
Member of the Society of Russian Students of the University of Tartu since 1931. Since 1934 - a citizen of the Republic of Estonia [3] .
He died in Tallinn on October 3, 1999. He was buried in the Tallinn cemetery Siselinn [2] [4] .
Labor
After graduation, Alexander worked for a short time as an assistant at the Department of Psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine of TU ; the next workplace of the young specialist was the village of Vyarska , where he was appointed a district doctor; then Dr. Gavrilov was sent to the Pechora hospital, where he was first a surgeon , then the head physician. The next place of life and work again became Tartu , where Gavrilov was offered an assistant at the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine of TU [2] .
In 1946, Alexander Gavrilov was invited to work in Tallinn, where he received the task of organizing the Estonian Oncology Service. Dr. Gavrilov completed training in the oncology specialty at the Leningrad Institute of Oncology [2] . In 1946–1951 and 1957–1980 , he was the head physician of the Tallinn Cancer Dispensary; since 1980, he continued to work in it as a consultant [3] .
In 1946-1983 - chief oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Estonian SSR; in 1959 - 1981 - Chairman of the Estonian Scientific Society of Oncologists. Head of the oncology sector of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of the ESSR. [3]
He carried out work on the introduction of plastic resection methods and treatment of gastric polyposis [3] . He was the first surgeon in Estonia to perform pneumonectomy surgery [1] .
Under the direction of Alexander Gavrilov, the first oncological cancer register in the Soviet Union based on the punch card system was created in the Tallinn Republican Oncology Center, opened on December 15, 1945 [2] .
Dr. Gavrilov is the most famous and honored practicing oncologist in Estonia of the 20th century [1] . He was awarded orders, medals and diplomas for his dedicated and fruitful work [2] .
The main merit of Dr. Gavrilov is the creation of Estonian clinical oncology and its development for half a century [2] .
It is known that the currently internationally recognized concept of the Comprehensive Cancer Center , where the main methods of treating cancer are brought under one roof, which provides patients with combined treatment based on the stage of the disease from the very beginning of the treatment process, was born in the Soviet Union. It was such a cancer treatment system that was created in Estonia in its early years. Thanks to the good name and organizational skills of Dr. Gavrilov , the construction of a new hospital was started in 1965 , and the modern Oncology Center of Estonia was opened on October 6, 1966 . Possessing high professionalism, Alexander Nikolayevich Gavrilov was very cordial, always ready to help a person who appreciated ethical values, and with all this he earned great respect and respect from his colleagues. Dr. Gavrilov participated in the development of the Code of Ethics for the Estonian Medical Association. Gentlemenhood and natural intelligence were those personal qualities that helped him equally successfully maintain relations with people in a wide variety of official positions and always remain balanced and humane even in the most difficult situations. Alexander Nikolaevich Gavrilov was not a member of the Communist Party [1] .
