Description

The top of the front wings with a dark spot. Reliable determination of many species is possible only on the basis of the structure of the male genitalia. The valvas are triangular or trapezoidal, sometimes merged in the island. The length of the aedeagus is equal to the length of the valvs [2] . Caterpillars mine the leaves of woody and herbaceous plants 112 genera from 31 families [3] .. Mines are located, as a rule, on the lower side of the leaf. Sheet while deformed. Less often, mines are formed on the upper side of the sheet. Caterpillars pupate in a mine [2] .

Economic value

Some species are of great economic importance as pests in forests and green spaces of cities. The biology of the phyllonorycter issikii [4] and poplar moths ( Phyllonorycter populifoliella ) [5] has been studied in great detail.

Spread

The genus is found in all biogeographical regions. In the world fauna 401 species are known, of which 257 species are found in the Palearctic [6] .
