History

The construction of the Dominican Church began between 1283 and [1] 1295 [2] .

A more active phase of construction occurred in the first half of the 14th century. The church was damaged in 1458, when a fire damaged the roof and the monastery and the Dominican Church began to need restoration work. Around 1475, under the leadership of Martin Schongauer , the Dominican Altar ( Isengheim Altar ) was created, which is now located in the Unterlinden Museum [1] [3] . Previously, the church was one of the components of the ensemble of the Dominican monastery [4] .

The basis of the church is a square-shaped nave, there are 6 compartments [2] .

The church is decorated with stained glass windows of the 14th and 15th centuries [5] , which depict scenes from the life of Christ [2] .

In 1720, the church was decorated with additional Baroque elements. Her appearance was not as strict as before. Throughout the 19th century, the church was used for non-religious purposes and only in 1898 the building returned to its original meaning. In the 1980s and 1990s, restoration work was carried out in the church [1] .

Since 1973, the Dominican Church has owned the painting by Martin Schongauer " Madonna in the Arbor of Roses ", which was originally exhibited in the cathedral church of St. Martin [1] . This picture is considered his most important surviving work [6] .

Located on the Dominican city square [1] .

The church is closed to visitors on May 1 and December 25 [1] . The rest of the time it works daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 [5] .

In 1992, the Dominican Church was recognized as a historical monument of France [7] .
