Biography

A miniature of Simon Marmion from Ober's manuscript "Visions of the Knight of Tondal", 1475

Born about 1413 in Kassel (modern Nor department), in the family of the ducal calligrapher Jean I Aubert, who previously served as an accountant with Countess Margarita of Flanders , and in 1433 mentioned in the documents as an auditor of the Accounts Chamber of Lille .

He worked in 1453 in Abbeville ( Pontier ), in 1459-1462 in Brussels , in 1467 in Bruges , and from 1474 to 1477 in Ghent [3] .

His brother Jean II Aubert served as an adviser to the Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good, and made him a patronage at the court of the latter in Bruges .

It was first mentioned in documents under 1463 as a court scribe , after which he served as secretary of the Duke of Philip until his death in 1467 . In 1469, Duke Karl the Bold was appointed superintendent of the library of the deceased.

Works

He completed 8 manuscripts for the third wife of Karl Margarita of York . Like his contemporary publishers, Jean Melo and Kola Mansionu , created a scriptorium and a workshop at the Burgundy court for the correspondence and illumination of manuscripts for court bibliophiles , including counselor Jean V de Kreki , chamberlain Antoine I de Croix , diplomat Jean de Wavren , chronicler Georges Chatelain and others.

Until now, it has not been precisely established whether he himself copied, translated and compiled all the manuscripts that he ordered, or only used the labor of hired craftsmen [4] .

By personal order of Philip the Good and his son Charles the Bold, he rewrote and illuminated the novels The Acts of King Perseforest and the Knights of the Free Hall (1460) and Renault de Montauban (1462), as well as The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius (1476). His manuscript "Visions of the Knight of Tondal" (1475) is illuminated for the wife of Karl Margarita of York by the famous miniature painter Simon Marmion [5] .

He also compiled compilation chronicles: “The Chronicle and Campaigns of Charlemagne” (1458, includes the legend of the Saracen knight Fiarabras), “The Chronicles of Normandy” (1459), “The Chronicle of Emperors” (1462), “The History of Karl Martell” (1463-1465) et al. [6] . He used The Great French Chronicles as the main sources, sometimes rewriting them verbatim [7] , as well as the writings of the Successor Fredegar , Eingard and Pseudo-Turpin. He used, in his own words, also books from the library of Saint-Denis , often not indicating in their works their names and the names of the authors [8] .

In total, David Ober hand signed 43 preserved manuscripts dated between 1453 and 1479, and another 27 are attributed to him.
