Biography
Born on March 25, 1952 in the city of Lida, Grodno Region, Belarusian SSR.
In 1969 - entered the Grodno State Medical Institute , in 1973 - transferred to the military medical faculty at the Kuibyshev State Medical Institute , from which he graduated in 1975.
Later he graduated with honors from the faculty of the senior medical staff of the S. Kirov Military Medical Academy , specialty “neurosurgery”.
From 1973 to 2007, he was in the military service, where he went from the resident surgeon of the military hospital to the deputy head of the Kirov Military Medical Academy (for scientific and then clinical work), was given the military rank of General major medical service.
From 2003 to 2012 - Chairman of the Committee on Healthcare of the Government of St. Petersburg , Acting State Counselor of St. Petersburg, 2nd class.
From 2012 to the present, he has been working at St. Petersburg State University - Advisor to the Rector, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Medical Technologies and at the same time Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine.
In 2011, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences .
In 2014, he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (as part of the accession of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences to the Russian Academy of Sciences ).
In 2016 he was elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Department of Medical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences).
Scientific Activities
Specialist in neurosurgery.
Carried out fundamental research on the scientific substantiation and implementation of minimally invasive endoscopic technologies in neuro-oncology, neurotraumatology, vascular and spinal neurosurgery into clinical practice; scientific development and introduction of innovative technologies for diagnosing and treating tumors of functionally significant areas of the brain; scientific substantiation and creation of a highly efficient system of assistance for traumatic brain injury, which reduced the mortality rate of victims by a factor of 2.0-3.3.
He spent the scientific development and creation of a highly effective system of emergency neonatological care (including generic head injury), which allowed to achieve the lowest infant mortality rate in Russia, comparable to the best international indicators. Scientifically substantiated and created a highly effective system of care for children with acute perinatal HIV infection (neuro-AIDS).
Under his leadership, defended 6 doctoral and 7 master's theses.
He is the author of more than 650 scientific works, including 43 educational and methodological manuals, 15 monographs, 7 manuals and textbooks on neurosurgery, reference books for doctors, 4 patents have been received.
