Biography
Mary Marguerite Lenin Cavana was born on May 12, 1935 in Ottawa ( Ontario , Canada ). In 1953, she received a degree in medical technology from the Ottawa City Hospital . In 1954 she moved to Australia - to Brisbane , where she began working as a hematologist in a city hospital. In 1955, she married lawyer Jerry Ford, whose father, Frank Ford , was a well-known politician, the 15th Prime Minister of Australia . At the end of 1966, Jerry Ford died of cancer [1] .
Left with five children without a husband, Lenin Ford decided to get an education at the University of Queensland and graduated in 1970 [1] , receiving a bachelor of law degree [2] . In its release, consisting of 170 people, there were only six women. After that, for 22 years she worked as a solicitor in Queensland, was a member of a number of judicial and public committees of the state, as well as other organizations. Since 1971, Ford has been a member of the international organization , which strives for women's rights [1] . In 1990-1992, she was the international president of this organization [3] - the first representative of Australia in this post [1] .
In 1992, Lenin Ford was appointed Governor of Queensland . Taking office on July 29, 1992, she became the first woman to be the Governor of Queensland (and second among all Australian states, following the Governor of South Australia, , who became Governor in February 1991) [1] . Ford worked for exactly five years by the Governor of Queensland, until July 29, 1997 [4] .
For 15 years, from June 2000 to May 2015, Lenin Ford was Chancellor . She became the first woman in this post [5] [6] .
In January 1993, Lenin Ford became a companion to the Order of Australia ( AC ) [7] . In 2001, she was awarded the Centenary Medal [8] . She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Queensland (1996) [2] and Griffith University (2002) [6] .
