History
The transatlantic flight of Charles Lindbergh (1927) prompted Renault to pay attention to engines for light aircraft . The 95-horsepower Renault 4Ps, which was soon developed, proved to be quite popular and was subsequently installed on several types of aircraft, including record ones.
In 1931, the designer Charles-Edmond Serre brought his power to 110-120 hp. ( Renault 4Pdi with 120 mm steel sleeves, aluminum cylinder heads, duralumin connecting rods and a magnesium alloy crankcase). The following year, a 120-strong modification appeared.
Renault 4Pei was one of the engines selected in 1936 headed by the director of the Moscow Aircraft Engine Plant No. 24 I.E. Maryamov commission for production in the USSR. Experimentally, it was installed on some light aircraft, however, the identified shortcomings (for example, the inability to start at temperatures below -15 degrees) and the outbreak of the war forced to abandon the mass production of the domestic version of the engine - MV-4
In France, Renault 4P-01 was produced in 1946-1949 by one of the SNECMA plants located in Arnage ( department of Sarthe ); at least 762 engine copies were produced. It was installed on a licensed biplane Stampe SV-4 , intended for French flying clubs.
