Biography

Portrait of K.F. Abel by Thomas Gainsborough

Father Abel Christian Ferdinand Abel was intimately acquainted with Johann Sebastian Bach , under whose leadership he studied at the St. Thomas Thomas Leipzig School . It is believed that exactly on the recommendation of Bach, the 24-year-old Abel in 1748 entered the Dresden court orchestra under the direction of Johann Adolf Hasse , where he worked for 10 years. In 1759 , Abel moved to England, where he became court composer of George III 's wife, Queen Charlotte. After arriving in London in 1762 , Johann Christian Bach Abel and Bach Jr. worked together a lot and in 1764 established a joint concert project, which became the first cycle of paid concerts by subscription in England.

In 1763, together with Count Saint-Germain, he wrote the musical comedy “The Summer's Tale” (“Summer Tale”). [7]

Abel was widely known as a virtuoso musician. Johann Wolfgang Goethe called him the last great gambist. It is characteristic that Christian Döbereiner , who revived performance on the viola da gamba, made his debut in 1905 as a gambist with the performance of the sonata of Abel. Abel’s composer’s legacy is quite extensive, although one of his symphonies was most curious in a somewhat curious way: a handwritten score of her was found in the papers of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and published under his name as Symphony No. 3 (K 18); apparently, the young Mozart rewrote it for himself in 1764 with educational purposes. Abel owns many symphonies, sonatas, concerts and overtures. He also willingly participated in the composition of comic opera-pastishs, which were usually the fruit of collective creativity - in particular, Abel’s music, along with the music of Johann Christian Bach, is in the opera of Tom Jones based on the story by Henry Fielding , set in London in 1769 .
