Biography

Inherited his title from his father, Dominic Mansoui Roger, Major General of the First Empire , Baron de Bellogue.

Cavalry officer, captain. As part of the Great Army, he took part in the war of the sixth coalition (1814). In April 1823, he participated in a French expedition under the command of the Duke of Angouleme against the Spanish constitutional government in order to restore the power of the Spanish king Fernando VII , who lost it during the civil war of 1820-1823 .

In 1834 he retired, and having a considerable fortune, devoted himself to historical and archaeological research, especially regarding Burgundy .

He lived in Paris, later for health reasons he moved to Nice, where he died in 1872.

Scientific activity

The author of the first studies on the early history of Burgundy, the results of which he presented in the writings of Questions bourguignonnes and Mémoire critique sur l'origine et les migrations des anciens Bourguignons (Dijon, 1846). They were followed by the Carte du premier royaume de Bourgogne (Dijon, 1848) and the Origines dijonnaises dégagées des fables et des erreurs qui les ont enveloppées jusqu'à ce jour (Dijon, 1851). All three of his works were awarded the gold medal of the French Academy .

Later he set himself the task of thoroughly and comprehensively studying the issues relating to the ancient population of France, the Celts and Gauls , based on recent studies in the field of linguistics, ethnology and earlier works. The result of these studies was Ethnogénie gauloise, Mémoires critiques (4 vols., Paris, 1858-73).

He studied not only the language, origin and national character of the Celtic tribes, but also the religion and beliefs of the Druids , detailed social life, their way of life, industrial activity and architecture, wars, movements and trade of ancient Gauls.

In 1869 he was nominated for the Great Gober Prize .
