Biography
Born September 12, 1851 in the German mining town of Bibergemünd in Spessart in the family of an official.
While studying at the University of Leipzig, he was a member of the Landsmannschaft Grimensia Leipzig fraternity. In 1874, he received his Ph.D. ( Ph.D. ) from the University of Marburg ; then, after working in Strasbourg as an assistant with Paul Grot , in 1879 he received a master's degree from the University of Berlin . From 1879 to 1881 he worked at the Prussian Geological Institute ( Preußischen Geologischen Landesanstalt ).
In 1881, Bucking became an assistant professor at the University of Kiel . In 1882, he was a professor of mineralogy and geology, as well as the director of the Mineralogical Museum of the Institute of Mineralogy at the University of Kiel. In 1883, he became director of the Geological Institute of Alsace-Lorraine and professor of mineralogy at the University of Strasbourg , succeeding his teacher Paul Grot.
Since Alsace after the First World War became French, Bucking was forced to leave his post in 1919; He was replaced by George Friedel .
Hugo Bucking continued to work at the University of Heidelberg , where he became an honorary professor and corresponding member of the physical and mathematical class of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . Got the title of Privy Counselor.
The German scientist was a member (since 1878) and an honorary member (since 1930) of the Upper Rhine Geological Association ( Oberrheinischer Geologischer Verein ), was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin .
Died November 18, 1932 in Heidelberg.
