Monto is a city in Queensland, Australia , located on the Burnett Highway 500 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 235 kilometers south of Rockhampton . The city was the administrative center of Monto County . In the 2016 census, the population of Monto was 1,189 people [2] .

History
Europeans settled the area in the late 1840s, containing large pastures in the northern part of the Burnett Valley. Gold found along the Three Moon Creek ( English : Three Moon Ckeek ; translated - Three Moon Creek ), a tributary of the Burnett River, attracted new settlers in the 1870s. The original excavation site, located 30 kilometers north of modern Monto, was flooded during the construction of the Cania dam. Monto was not officially considered a city until 1924, when a post office was opened there [3] . When gold reserves began to run out, Monto switched his economy to agriculture and logging. Both industries today are the two main industries in the region. Coal and limestone deposits were discovered in Shire County.
According to the 2006 census, the population of Monto was 1,159 people [4] .
Landscaping
Monto has a cultural and historical complex with a museum-reserve, sports facilities, a swimming pool and a golf club.
The North Burnett Regional Council runs the Monto Public Library at 50 Newton Street [5] .
A QCWA affiliate, Monto-Bancroft, meets at 9 Rutherford Street [6] .
Tourism
Tourism is one of the main industries in the region. In addition to being a major city on the highway, the main local attractions are Cania Gorge National Park and the Cania Dam , located 20 km north of the city.
Mining
In 2006, Monto Minerals entered the Alternative Investment Market in London , raising about $ 41 million before expenses [7] . Since then, she announced her plans to begin commercial production of feldspar, ilmenite, apatite and titanomagnetite from the Gondikum crater ( Eng . Goondicum ), near the eastern border of Monto Shire ( Eng . Monto Shire ), from the second quarter of 2007 [8] .
Coal mining company Macarthur Coal also owns large amounts of land in the Mulgildie area.
