History
The existing church was built to replace the Christian church , which burned down during a big city fire in 1886. The laying of the church took place on April 8, 1892, the project was developed by the architect [1] [2] . On August 31, 1894, the church was consecrated by Bishop . The construction cost amounted to 415 thousand crowns [3] .
The church was built on the expectation that Skien would become the bishop's residence and that the new church would become a cathedral, which did not happen. During the Second World War, the Quisling government changed the boundaries of dioceses and the Church of Skien became a cathedral, but after the end of the war the former borders were restored.
Architecture
The building was built in neo-Gothic style , in the plan it has the shape of a Latin cross. The main facade has three portals, over which two towers 68 m high rise. The outer surface of red brick is decorated with glazed brick. The church combines neo-Gothic lancet arches and round arches in the Romanesque style . The length of the building is 47 m, the height of the arches is 17 m [4] .
The department is decorated with nine images by HK, written by H.K. Hansen Jr. ( Norwegian HC Hansen jr. ).
The altar has the shape of a church facade with five portals and three towers. A large cross is installed on the middle tower, which partially hides the stained glass window of the Resurrection of Christ. Below the portals are images of Christ and the four evangelists, also written by Hansen Jr. In the center of the altar table is a menorah , surrounded by two candlesticks from the Christian Church . Also from this church is a picture to the left of the Choir of the Coffin , which is a copy of the original Caravaggio . The altar also contains the stone of the former church [5] . Church stained-glass windows were made by the German company Hemmersdorf & Co [1] .
The church organ is the second largest in the country with more than 5,000 pipes and 70 registers [6] [3] . The original organ was built in 1894 at the Olsen & Jørgensens orgelfabrik factory in Oslo. In 1954, it was replaced by the factory organ J. Jørgensens Orgelfabrik, which was subsequently modernized. The facade of the organ was designed by the architect [7] .
Initially, the church was designed for 1400 seats, currently the number of seats has decreased to 1040 [3] .
