History
The bridge was built between 1935 and 1939. It was the largest road bridge project in Finland of that period. [one]
The bridge was designed by Herman Ossian Hannelius, a professor of bridge construction, and engineer Emil Holmberg. Construction work began on February 4, 1935. [2]
The bridge was opened on July 9, 1939 and was named after Uuno Hannula, the governor of the region and the initiator of the construction of the bridge. At the opening of the bridge, Governor Hannula gave a speech, and his wife, Ellie Hannula, opened the bridge. [3] The central span of the bridge is 108 meters.
The bridge is one of the few bridges preserved during the war in Lapland .
During the construction of sidewalks, a fire occurred on April 16, 1962, in which a third of the bridge superstructure burned down. During extinguishing work, a fire truck fell on the ice of the Tourneelven River. Her driver died in the collapse of a steel beam on the city side. Several firefighters and builders were also injured, [4] a total of 24 were hospitalized. Telephone and power lines have also been disconnected.
At the time of repair work, the movement of cars was started on the ice of the river. However, at that time it had already begun to melt, which caused a large number of cracks to appear. [five]
Tourneelven Bridge was built in 1979 in parallel to the existing bridge, due to the need to increase traffic and understudy. [3]
