Biography

Dieter Freise was born on February 18, 1945 in the city of Heidelberg , Germany . He started playing hockey from an early age on the instructions of his father, Gunther Freise, who at one time was also quite a successful hockey player. He played for the local club HC Heidelberg, with whom he twice won the West German national championship, and since 1969 he began to be involved in the national team of Germany .

In 1970, he won a gold medal at the first European Field Hockey Championship in Belgium .

In 1971, at the first World Hockey Championship in Pakistan, he won two victories and suffered two defeats, settling down on the fifth line in the final protocol of the competition.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . Here, German hockey players beat most of their rivals, including in the final with a score of 1: 0, they prevailed over the world champions from Pakistan , and thereby won Olympic gold medals. At the same time, Freise played in all seven matches of his team and subsequently for this outstanding achievement was awarded the highest sports award of Germany “ Silver Bay Leaf ” [1] .

After the Munich Olympics, Dieter Freize remained in the German national team and continued to take part in major international competitions. So, in 1975 he went to the world championship in Malaysia , from where he brought the award of bronze dignity.

In 1976, he performed at the Montreal Olympics , but this time he could not get into the number of winners, taking the final fifth place.

In February 1977, Freise decided to end his career in the national team, because at that time he had to take over the dental business of his parents. In total, he spent 86 games for the German national team, including 73 on the open field and 13 indoors. At the same time, for another ten years, he continued to play at the club level for the team from Heidelberg, and in 1982 in its composition he again became the champion of the country. Later he remained in the club as a coach, was engaged in the preparation of the youth team.

He died on April 5, 2018 in Heidelberg at the age of 73. He was buried in the Bergfriedhof cemetery [2] .
