Shepherds of the night

"Pastors of the Night" ( port. Os Pastores da Noite ) - a novel by the classic of Brazilian literature and academician of the Brazilian Academy of Literature, Jorge Amado , completed and first published in 1964 . The first translation into Russian by Yu. A. Kalugin was published in a magazine version entitled “We Grazed the Night” (1966), in the same year a book issue called “Shepherds of the Night” followed. Some novel novels were published as independent works in the 2nd (1982) and 3rd (1987) volumes of the collected works of the writer. French filmmaker Marcel Camus made the movie Otalia de Bahia based on the novel, which was released in France in 1976 .

Description

The novel was created from the end of 1963 until the beginning of 1964 in Salvador and was released as the first edition in July 1964 [1] . “Shepherds of the night” can be regarded as a 3-part novel involving the same characters, observing the unity of time and place of action. In addition, the work is considered as a collection of independent short stories or short stories [1] . “Shepherds of the night” include three short stories (or novels ):

  • “The true and detailed story of the marriage of Corporal Martin, rich in events and surprises, or Romantic Curio and the disappointments of treacherous love”
  • “ Interval for the baptism of Felicio, the son of Masu and Benedita, or Qum Ogun ”
  • “Capture of the Mata Gato Hill, or Friends of the People”

The action of the novels takes place in Salvador - in the port, on the streets and in the courtyards, on the terreira (venues) of the Candomble and in capoeira circles. In the first part (short story), the rumor about the marriage of Corporal Martin to Marialva stirs up Bahia and reaches the neighboring state of Sergipe . With its attractiveness, the beautiful Marialva arouses the interest of many men, Curio falls in love with the wife of his best friend Martin. The favorite of women, Corporal Martin, helps the young prostitute of Otalia find and return her suitcase. In the second part, the powerful and huge black man Massu adopts the child of a prostitute Benedita, with whom he had a fleeting connection. The godfather of the blue-eyed boy is Orisha Ogun . In the third novel, the inhabitants of the hill of Mata Gato ( Mata Gato ) are forced to protect their homes and confront the police, as the owner of the land plot obtained permission to expel them from their property [2] .

In Brazil, the Shepherds of the Night novel has withstood about 50 reprints. The original language was published in Portugal . Translated into English , Bulgarian , Hungarian , Hebrew , Spanish , Italian , German , Dutch , Polish , Romanian , Russian , Slovak , Slovenian , Turkish , Finnish , French , Czech [1] . In the USSR, as well as in Brazil, the novel came out in its entirety; moreover, short stories were published separately in the collected works of the writer.

In 1977, the author recorded the reading of excerpts from the novel for the Library of Congress [2] .
