Clan Elliot Story

Origin of the Elliot Clan

The origin of the Elliot clan remains unknown. Clan Elliot suddenly appears on the historical scene of Scotland at the end of the 15th century as an old separate clan with its traditions, symbols and leaders [2] . The lack of information about the long history of the Elliot clan is associated with the destruction and fire of Stobs Castle in 1712 [2] . All archives and documents of the clan were lost in the fire, and people who were bearers of legends and traditions died or died [2] .

But according to those historical legends, preserved in ancient times, the clan was called Ellot, Eloh, Eloh. The clan came from the foot of the Glenshi Mountains in the Angus area . During the reign of King Robert the Bruce, the clan moved to Teviotdale. [2] In the history of Scotland, this is a kind of exception. The fact is that in 1320, William de Soules - one of the strongest aristocrats of Scotland, was convicted of treason against King Robert the Bruce [2] . William de Soulis was imprisoned for life, and his lands Liddesdale and his Hermitage Castle were confiscated and transferred to the bastard son Robert Bruce. The king needed a faithful and tested clan, the Elliot clan, to live on the border with England, and especially on such a strategic part of the border.

XV century

It is known that the branch of the Elliot clan of Redhue lived on these lands since at least 1400 [2] . In documents from 1426, John Elvidel from Redhyu is known [2] . In 1476, Robert Elliott of Redhue, the 10th leader of Clan Elliott , is known. Robert Elliot built a strong castle on a cliff overlooking the Hermitage Water River in 1470 . And it was only one of the 100 castles that stood in those regions on the border with England and belonged to the Elliott and Armstrong clans - to the clans of the Scottish Borderlands , who constantly fought against England.

16th Century - Clan Wars

Robert Elliot, the 13th leader of the Elliot clan, was killed during the Battle of Floden in 1513 . The Elliot clan supported the Scott clan of Backlu at the battle of Melrose in 1526 . But in 1565 there was a mortal feud between the Elliott and Scott clans, who were neighbors. Clan Scott of Backlu killed four young children from the Elliot clan for hijacking cattle. In response, hundreds of men from the Elliot clan went to avenge the death. As a result of the war between the clans, both clans had heavy losses, but in the end the clans reconciled.

There was a conflict between the clan Elliot and James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell , the future husband of Mary Stuart , Queen of Scotland [2] . The shootout occurred near the Hermitage castle , the count was wounded. Carrying out revenge, in 1569, the royal army of 4,000 men devastated the lands of the Elliot clan [2] .

XVII - XX century

In 1603, the dynastic union of England and Scotland put an end to the endless mutual raids on the Anglo-Scottish frontier [2] . To stop the raids and raids, the king executed many people, many people from the Borderlands moved to Ireland, where the war continued and the raiders could lead a life they were used to [2] .

Robert Elliot from Redhue left the lands of Liddesdale and went into exile in Fife . In 1666, Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs received the title of baronet of Nova Scotia from the King of England Charles II Stewart [2] . He became the leader of the Elliot clan in 1673 [2] .

In 1764, Sir Gilbert Elliot, 3rd Baronet Elliot (1680-1764), repaired the old Stobs castle. His second son Augustus Elliot (1717–1790) was awarded for the heroic defense of Gibraltar in 1782 [2] .

One of the branches of the clan acquired the land of Minto in 1703 . Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kininmond, 1st Earl of Minto (1751-1814), was a politician and diplomat , served in Corsica and in Vienna. He later became Governor-General of India (1807–1813) [2] .

Clan Chief

The current leader of the Elliot clan is a woman β€” Margaret Frances Boswell Elliott of Redhew (born November 13, 1948), the 29th clan chieftain [4] . She is the daughter of Sir Arthur Elliot, the 11th Baronet Elliot, and the 28th Chief of the Clan Elliot (1915-1989). According to the traditions of the clan, a woman can be the leader of the clan, but can not inherit the title of baronet [2] .
