Island History

The first settlements on the Chiemsee Islands appeared, presumably, as early as the Stone Age [3] . Approximately 300 years BC. er The Celts settled around the lake, and around 15 AD er the Romans appeared here [4] . Further history Fraueninsel is inextricably linked with the Benedictine monastery founded by the Duke of Tassilon III in 782 (hence the name: “Female Island” , for comparison: on the neighboring island of Herreninsel - German Herreninsel , translated: “Male Island” was once a man’s monastery) [5] . The first abbess , whose name was preserved for posterity, was the . Irmgard, Irmengard von Chiemsee ), who led the abbey from 850 [6] [7] . During the raids of the Hungarians in 907 and during the fires of 1491 and 1572, the monastery was partially destroyed, but restored again and again [8] . The village church of St. Martin, first mentioned at the end of the 14th century , was located on the southern side of the island for a long time. It was demolished as part of secularization in 1803 [8] . The island remained unknown for a long time, until in 1828 artists “settled there” led by Maximilian Haushofer “discovered” it [8] . The organization of regular shipping on the Chiemsee, the construction of a railway linking Prien am Chiemsee with Munich and Salzburg , and the opening of the Herrenkimze Palace to the general public led in the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the tourist pilgrimage to the “Island of the Women” , which continues to day [8] .

Attractions

One of the most important attractions of the island, having a length of 600 and a width of 300 meters, is the current Benedictine abbey, which occupies about one third of its area [9] . In the monastery church, consecrated in 782 and rebuilt in the XI - XIII centuries , the frescoes , which are about 900 years old, are partially preserved; Also of interest is the more than 300-year-old baroque altar [10] . The detached octagonal bell tower with a height of 36 meters of the XI - XVI centuries is an architectural symbol of the “Women's Island” [11] . In the nearby cemetery there are the remains of many famous cultural figures [9] , such as Wilhelm Jensen , Franz Rubo and Christian Ruben , as well as General Ferdinand Jodl . The abbey is known, moreover, by its own production of marzipan , gingerbread and herbal liqueurs [12] .

The structure of the eighth century was completely preserved, combining the functions of a hall and a gate ( German Torhalle ) - the oldest high-rise building of southern Germany still existing - now the place of permanent exhibition of archaeological finds [5] [13] . The historical lindens named after Tassilon ( German Tassilolinde ) and Maria ( German Marienlinde ), whose age is estimated from 500 to 1000 years, are worthy of mention [14] .
