History
In 1893, Ivan Patev , a resident of Kazanlak , built the first water conduit from Buzludzha Mountain to the city. Later, the eminent city dweller sent Ferdinand I a letter asking him to install a fountain and name it in honor of the prince and his wife Maria Louise . Flattered by such attention, Ferdinand I allocated funds for the construction and sent for the work of the sculptor Arnoldo Dzokki . In 1903, in the presence of the monarch, the fountain was inaugurated [1] .
The fountain itself was called the Princely, or Tsarsky, but the inhabitants of Kazanlak often called it Lion due to the fact that the water flows from three bronze taps made in the form of lion heads [2] .
In 1944, after the royal symbols - carved columns with capitals forming the corners of the structure, on which the initials of the king "F" and "I" were depicted, as well as a plate with the inscription that the fountain is his gift to the city, - were dismantled [3] .
In 1989, the fountain was renovated and restored to its original form [3] . Reconstruction works were also carried out from 2012 to 2014 [4] .
