History

The public library in Colmar is located in a former Dominican monastery. In October 1278, the Dominican brothers arrived in Colmar, before which the Dominican sisters Winterlinden were in the city. In 1283, the construction of the church began. Dominican brothers could receive a liberal arts education in a school, which was then a university education [1] .

During the revolution, the former monastery buildings were confiscated. In 1951, a rich family collection of the public library was located in these buildings. The library was built around the confiscated library of the Murbach Abbey; it contains at least 1200 manuscripts. The oldest of these manuscripts dates from the 8th century. This building contains 50,000 volumes dated to the 6th century, a collection of 25,000 Alsatian documents, which also contain numismatic and iconographic information. There is a public reading room and a media library, which were transferred to the buildings of the former hospital in 2012 [1] .
