History
The first church in Tromsø was built by Haakon Haakonsson around 1250 as a royal chapel. [3] Not much is known about previous churches in this place, but it is known that in 1711 a new church was built on this site. In 1803, a new building was built, which in 1860 was demolished to make way for the construction of the current cathedral. The cathedral was built according to the design of [4] . On December 1, 1861, the cathedral was consecrated by Bishop . In 1862, the bell tower was completed and a bell was installed. Interior decoration continued until the 1880s.
Interior
The interior of the cathedral is dominated by an altar with a copy of the painting by Adolf Tidemanda Resurrection from the in Drammen , made by Kristen Brun in 1884. The painting has a neo-Gothic frame in the shape of a portal with a pediment and a spire. A quotation from the Gospel of John is made under the picture. Stained glass windows in front of the church, designed by Per Vigeland, were installed in 1961. The organ, located in the gallery above the main entrance, was built in 1863 by Klaus Jensen and is one of the most valuable organs of the time in Norway [1] [5] . The cathedral was originally designed for 984 places. To make room for tables in the back of the church, the number of seats has now been reduced to 618. In 1994, the interiors of the cathedral were painted in their original color [6] .
