History and Description

The city and regional library of the city of Gera was founded on October 20, 1920 at the initiative of Gustav Hennig (1868-1948), a native of Leipzig ; it became a gathering place for several city book collections that were created only in the 19th century - since during a major fire on September 18, 1780, almost all books in the city (about 100'000 volumes) were destroyed [3] [4] . The initial fund mainly consisted of parts of the disbanded Central Working Library of Hera and the Central Library of Trade Unions, as well as three bourgeois public libraries. To this was gradually added a small number of books from school libraries and local reading clubs; later, the Ratsbibliothek collection, founded in 1867, was added to the funds. In 1923, the library was equated with other state libraries and renamed the Thuringian State Library of Hera. In the era of the GDR , in 1976, it again received the status of a public library, and in 1985 it began to bear the name of Alexander Pushkin . In 1986, her collection totaled 375,480 bibliographic units.
