QNews is a Queensland-oriented LGBT + people magazine for members of the Australian LGBT + community and their allies. The magazine is published once every two weeks. The magazine covers local and national LGBT + events, social issues, health, entertainment and culture. The print publication and website are free and exist entirely through advertising.

The publication regularly collaborates with the LGBT + community in Queensland and northern New South Wales , including the Brisbane Pride [1] , Cairns Tropical Pride [2] and the Tropical Fruits ) [3] .

In April 2016, the magazine issued its 400th issue and noted that it was the record for the largest number of issues of printed LGBT + Queensland publications [4] .

In October 2018, QNews appointed the transgender woman Destiny Rogers to the post of editor-in-chief, and this is reportedly the first Australian publication to have done this [5] .

History

QNews was formed in December 2000 after the cessation of the publication of Brother Sister, in the wake of the collapse of the national LGBT publishing house Satellite Media. The first issue of QNews was released on December 15, 2000, under the direction of Ray Mackeret , who previously ran Brother Sister. From the very beginning, this was a biennial publication; initially, the magazine was issued in the format of a tabloid newspaper. Historian Shirlin Robinson described QNews as less arrogant than its rival, Queensland Pride [6] [7] [8] .

In 2013, The Australian newspaper claimed that QNews overestimated its distribution rates, saying the publication claimed to have distributed about twice as many copies as it actually printed. It is assumed that the circulation of the magazine at that time averaged about 8500 copies [9] .

In 2015, the magazine faced financial difficulties and the prospect of closure, as a result of which the magazine needed a crowdfunding campaign to support the publication for a long enough time to interest the new publisher [10] . The magazine faced additional problems later that year after its then owner, Ray Mackeret, filed for bankruptcy. [11] Later that month, the magazine was sold to a businessman from Queensland , Richard Bakker .

Distribution

Currently, QNews has more than 450 distribution points [12] , mainly throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales [13] .

A print magazine is also published online every two weeks. [14]
