Ricci's range of interests was wide - from hydraulic mechanisms to cosmology . At the Academy, he taught geometry to many future renowned artists, including Giorgio Vasari . Ricci was considered an expert in civil engineering and military architecture.

Ricci also taught mathematics at the University of Pisa . Galileo was originally going to study medicine there, but under the influence of Ostilio Ricci became interested in mathematics. Ricci's lectures on the achievements of Euclid and Archimedes , his orientation on applied methods of mathematics had a profound effect on the views and subsequent works of Galileo [4] .

Viviani in his biography of Galileo writes [4] :

So began the named Ricci to give young Galileo the usual explanations of the definitions, axioms and postulates of the first book, “Beginnings,” and Galileo found these principles so clear and certain that he believed in the inevitable strength and harmony of the whole building of geometry.

In particular, Ricci expressed the opinion, later adopted by Galileo, that the best tool for knowing nature is not Aristotelian logic, but mathematics.
