5P-42 Eagle Owl

Frigate "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov" on which the Filin station is installed

5P-42 "Eagle Owl" - station of visual-optical interference. This system can blind the enemy and cause him to hallucinate. The effect occurs due to low-frequency brightness fluctuations that excite the optic nerves [1] .

Content

Basic Information

The Filin station was developed by Integral Pilot Plant JSC (part of Roselectronics).

It is designed to suppress at night and dusk the visual-optical and optical-electronic channels for observing and aiming small arms, as well as melee weapons used against surface ships and boats of the Navy.

The station's action is based on modulation of the brightness of light radiation. Low-frequency fluctuations in the brightness of radiation due to excitation of the optic nerves cause temporary reversible visual disturbances.

Volunteer testers noted the impossibility of conducting aimed fire from small arms at targets covered by the station when the station was placed at a distance of up to 2000 meters from the positions of shooters due to the fact that “the target is not visible”. 20% of the volunteers noted a hallucinogenic effect, described as a “spot of light floating before their eyes,” and 45% of the participants complained of dizziness, nausea, and signs of disorientation in space.

The radiation of the station in the visible and part of the infrared spectra in combination with high-frequency modulation of brightness makes it possible to effectively suppress night vision devices, infrared laser rangefinders, and anti-tank guided missile guidance systems at ranges up to 5000 meters.

Filin stations have already been installed on the frigates Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov and Fleet Admiral Kasatonov. These ships are equipped with two sets of stations. Similar equipment will be installed on two more frigates of project 22350, the construction of which is already underway at the Severnaya Verf shipyard [2] .

Criticism

The station is ineffective against modern aviation weapons, UAVs and anti-ship missiles [3]

According to The Popular Mechanics, the station is ineffective in relation to the operators of most modern missile systems [4]

According to an employee of the Institute of the Human Brain of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 5P-42 Filin system is most likely ineffective [5]
