Biography
Born in Moscow on February 15, 1930. During World War II, the family was evacuated in the suburbs . In 1947 she entered the Moscow State University . The thesis on the larval stages of the development of ixodid ticks was carried out under the direction of Alexander Borisovich Lange [1] . In addition to her own materials, Filippova analyzed the fees stored at the Institute of Tropical Medicine named after E. I. Martsinovsky , which were provided to her by Vladimir Nikolaevich Beklemishev [3] . Materials of the thesis were published in the " Zoological Journal ". After graduation, she entered the graduate school of the Entomology Department of Moscow State University to Evgeny Sergeyevich Smirnov . Candidate dissertation was defended in 1955 on the topic “Studies on the morphology and systematics of ixodin.” In addition to the supervisor, the professional development of Natalia Alexandrovna Filippova was influenced by Maria Vladimirovna Pospelova-Shtrom , Vsevolod Borisovich Dubinin and Alexander Samoilovich Monchadsky . After defending the thesis, academician Pavlovsky drew the young acarologist and took her to work at the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences . The main task at the new place of work was the preparation of the volume “Fauna of the USSR” on argas ticks . This task was completed by 1966 and in 1967 this monograph was defended as a doctoral dissertation. In 1978, she became a member of the editorial board of the journal Parasitology, and since 1989 she was deputy editor-in-chief of this journal. From 1995 to 2005 she was a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Acarology [1] .
Scientific Achievements
The collections carried out by Filippova in 50 expeditions throughout the territory of the Soviet Union doubled the number of known species of ticks of the order Ixodida . The collection of species of this group, stored at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, processed by Filippova is the largest in the world [3] . The pioneering contribution was the use of the characteristics of ontogenesis in the taxonomy of Ixodida. In her work, the subgeneric classification of the genus Ixodes was completely revised . She led the preparation and writing of a monograph on the tick Ixodes persulcatus , published as part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program. In the early 1990s, she predicted that Lyme disease pathogens in Eurasia are closely related to ticks of the Ixodes persulcatus group, including the Ixodes pavlovskyi species, which was poorly studied at that time . In the 2000s, she analyzed the features of the external structure of closely related species that provide reproductive isolation between these species in areas of overlapping habitats [1] . Under her leadership, Filippova defended four candidate dissertations. She was a member of the dissertation council at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an expert at the Higher Attestation Commission [3] .
